Google Estate Agents Listings

Google Maps and Estate Agents

Of interest with Google Maps – They are dropping Homes for Sale listings on maps.  Personally I really believe this is a good move for Google and Estate Agents.

First here is what Google say:

In part due to low usage, the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real estate websites, and the infrastructure challenge posed by the impending retirement of the Google Base API (used by listing providers to submit listings), we’ve decided to discontinue the real estate feature within Google Maps on February 10, 2011.

Here’s what I think:

To Estate Agents and Lettings services why not use Google adWords to rank  your homes for sale and to let at the very top on Google?

A home is pretty unique in that there is only one address and probably not many for sale in any given area so gaining number one spot on Google would be easy PLUS there are multiple opportunities with Google adWords – PPC – to rank for other homes for sale in the same paid using the very excellent sitelinks.

Google Places Plymouth

“Whether you’re looking for a great lounge to hang out with your friends or a trusty shop to repair your bicycle, the web is a great place to discover and learn about local businesses and services. Some of the listings on Google Maps showcase reviews to help prospective customers make informed decisions and find the places that are just right for them.

Reviews on Google Maps are assembled from a variety of sources on the web to give you the best possible overview of what people are saying about a specific place. We also encourage users to share their opinions by writing reviews directly on the Place Page of any place they’ve visited, be it a local business, tourist attraction or the like.”

New Google Maps – Local Guidelines

The business name must be the full legal business name.

No stuffing of keywords into the business name, Google recognizes that you are trying to manipulate the search results. “Solicitors Plymouth Devon for top Solicitor Services in Plymouth” is a big no-no.

No stuffing of URLs or phone numbers into the business name.

A property for rent isn’t considered a business; use the main office for the address. This is a big one for flat  rental companies and estate agents who have tried to list every property  separately in the past.

If your business operates in several Towns or Cities don’t create a listing for each city, use the main office location.

Physical business locations only, PO Boxes don’t count.

Best practices have always been to use an email address that matches your business’s URL, so for www.abfabmedia.com use david@abfabmedia.com .

It’s also best to use an email address that is shared by people in the company. For example admin@abfabmedia.com is shared between the business development and marketing team.

When choosing categories only choose those that apply to your business, and not related categories

Use the description and custom attribute fields for additional information about your listing – don’t stuff it into other fields.

Google Local Business Listings are about to change the way small businesses market and advertise themselves very, very soon.

Things are changing and this new Google way of advertising is going to be very far reaching in so much as the Yellow Pages and Plymouth local newspapers are going to be losing business in a big way!

Google are even offering a free “site” to advertise your local business – how cool is that?

Whatever – we are a small Internet Marketing, SEO and Google Local specialist that can help you do well on google without the fancy talk and cheat the customer style that is so prevalent on the Internet these days!

Unless you’ve been living under a very large rock the past 18 months, the recession we’ve been in has forced marketers to do two things – look for new opportunities to promote their businesses (blogs and websites) and be more sensitive to the needs of their consumers. This is illustrated well in the rise of local search marketing and coupon use. The need to make online coupons work in the context of a local business, however, remains challenging. That’s about to change – the new internet gold rush is here. You need a simple blog now!

Small business owners (especially those of the brick and mortar variety) have an advantage over larger retailers today. Thanks to millions of consumers searching for local businesses and the increasing convergence of search with mobile devices, a genuinely viable opportunity is now present. Maps, mobile devices and local search put your business front and center when and where consumers need you and, in some cases, on equal footing with the big boys of commerce.

Google Maps

…. they’re GREAT! Now we have  a way to get all the cheats back.  Cheating on Google Maps messes the whole point of Google Maps up so do report anything dodgy.

What with the big push with Android and Maps on your Smart Phone the last thing Google (and us) need are fake listings whilst we’re out and about so help us help Google and snitch on the cheats!

Google hopes this new reporting form will be more accurate as the user doesn’t have to enter in the URL of the location with the error, which the old, but still in use Map Spam Reporting Form still requires.

At this time the reporting option is only available to listings in the United States and some sections of Europe where Community Editing is allowed.

The Google Maps team is typically quick to act on errors in maps, such as an incorrect pin location, but in responding to spam reports they can be frustratingly slow. The lack of response for spam issues is normal for Google as they prefer to make changes to the spam algorithm vs making hand edits of listings when possible. So just because you don’t see them acting on a spam report doesn’t mean they have ignored your submission completely.
