What is Google+

Google+ is a social networking service operated by Google Inc. The service launched on June 28, 2011, in an invite-only testing phase. The following day, existing users were allowed to invite friends, who are above 18 years of age, to the service to create their own accounts. However, this was quickly suspended in a day after there was “insane demand” for accounts.

Google+ will be built as a layer that not only integrates different Google social services, such as Google Profiles and Google Buzz, but also introduces many new features including Circles, Hangouts, Sparks and Huddles. Google+ will also be available as a desktop application and as an application on Android and iOS operating systems.

Sources such as The New York Times have declared it Google’s biggest attempt to rival the social network Facebook, which had over three quarters of a billion users in 2011.

Don’t doubt the excellence of Google+

Rocky Agrawal, VentureBeat, January 11, 2012

“People have been doing a form of social search in a very inefficient way by using Facebook status updates to pose questions to friends. . . . With SPYW, Google automates this process and makes it instantaneous. Instead of relying on users to actively respond to my request, I get access to all of the previous activity they’ve shared. If a second- or third-degree friend shares content about a topic, I instantly have access to it. Think of it as word-of-mouth on steroids. . . . SPYW is a great product and represents a very important milestone in search.”

Clint Boulton, eWeek, January 10, 2012

“Google finally managed to fashion a credible social search solution, using its Google+ network to include Picasa photos, posts and other personalized content in users’ search results…The new feature is a way to combat the “faceless Web” problem of highly impersonal search results Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and the rest of the search vendors have provided for the last decade and a half.”

Jeff Roberts, paidContent.org, January 10, 2012

“From a design perspective, the product looks good. . . . The product also makes sense from a conceptual point of view. People value Google’s all-powerful search algorithm and will likely enjoy applying it to their own online lives. ”

Danny Sullivan, Search Engine Land, January 10, 2012

“Overall, I like the integration that allows for searching through private and public material. As I’ve said, I think many people will find it useful.”

Jolie O’Dell, Venture Beat, January 10, 2012

“If you, like your curmudgeonly correspondent here, bristle at the thought of yet another change to what was once a simple, beautiful product, remember that short months and years ago, image and shopping and news results were not included in the basic web search, either.”

Chris Crum, WebProNews, January 11, 2012

“Part of the reason I use multiple products from Google is because I expect there to be integration. It’s often disappointing when that integration is lacking. It makes things less usable. If I’m signed in to my Google account, I want easy access to content that’s related to my Google account. If I want things from Facebook or Twitter, I know where to look.”

Here’s a fact worth considering: 97 percent of consumers search for local businesses online. Another: 73 percent of all online activity is related to local content, according to data released by Google.

This has huge implications for small businesses, which often depend on Google—in terms of organic and paid search—to generate phone calls, foot traffic, and overall brand visibility. But while most businesses spend time and marketing dollars perfecting their paid search campaigns and SEO strategies, plenty overlook one of the most valuable (and free) resources that Google has ever offered: Google Places.

Places was launched in September 2009, and ostensibly replaced the Google Local Business Center. On Google’s official blog, the service was introduced as ” a webpage for every place in the world, organizing all the relevant information about it.”

Two years after its launch, many companies are still struggling to get it right.

“It’s a very difficult and delicate ecosystem,” says Chris Watson, the co-founder and chief marketing officer of Everspark Interactive, a full-service SEO agency based in Atlanta. “In the beginning, we spent 12 months thinking we had the variables right only to find that sometimes we got it completely wrong.”

The good news is that Google Places is free and fairly painless to set up. The bad news is that it takes more than just a couple of clicks to start generating paying customers. Watson notes that maintaining the Places account is just like any other aspect of the marketing mix, and should not be left to an inexperienced office manager to set up.

Marketing Your Business Using Google Places: Set Up an Account

Adding a listing takes just three steps. They are:

Submit your information, from basic contact info to photos and video.

Verify your listing by phone or postcard.

Wait for your listing to appear on Google.

To create your business’s Places page, Google will crawl the Web and find information about your business from a variety of third-party sources, including Yelp and Yellow Pages.

Once you’ve set up the listing, it’s important to fill out all of the relevant information, including hours of operation, payment options, categories, and additional details. This is not merely to help your customers navigate your Places page. It’s to help you, too: the richer in content your listing is, the more prominent your Places organic ranking will become.

Google Offers On The Way

Help and Tips in Plymouth

Google Offers is an upcoming deal-of-the-day website that will be localized to major geographics markets in the United States and abroad by Google.

Google confirmed the webiste in January 2011, after an attempted buyout by Google of established competitor Groupon for a reported sum of $6 billion was turned down.

Nate Tyler, a Google spokesman, stated that the company is “communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a prepaid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products … that connect businesses with customers in new ways.”

Users receive an e-mail with a local deal of the day. They then have the opportunity to buy that deal within a specific time limit (usually 24 hours). Once enough people have made the purchase, the Google Offer is triggered and users get a discount. Google Offers will be powered by Google Checkout. It will also include Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Google Buzz and e-mail sharing options.
