My SEO Book

The Easiest SEO Book in the World?

I’ve been working on ranking website and, later, WordPress blogs since 1997 and turned something I stumbled over into a small business. There were times I could have grown the SEO business and later the WordPress Website Design side of things BUT decided to stay small and honest.

  • I’ve seen and heard far too many desperate, larger SEO companies lie and talk in riddles to innocent “potential” clients just to get their money
  • Personally I’ve always been annoyed with this and have always sworn to be a very small and honest business with no fluff or fairy stories – not to mention extortionate rates

There are many, many SEO Books out there and to be honest I don’t feel any offer real value to small local businesses most are aimed at people wanting to be an “SEO” it seems. Aren’t there enough?

  • Over the past few months I have been struggling to write a small e book about SEO and how to get local business better traffic through Google and their vast offering of tools – I have so far managed ten pages of good, solid advice that will walk anyone with a small or large local business through the steps…   I’m struggling to add more content and have come to the conclusion that for a real world small, local business SEO is so very  simple.  I’ve always known so – BUT putting my thoughts and practices into words have rammed home the fact that SEO is really easy

Anchor Text Links

Anchor Text Links? Don’t Worry About It..

To be honest of late I’ve had a sneaking feeling that there is way too much noise out there from less than honest  seo service about anchor text links….

I frequently used anchor text links many years ago BUT noticed i had two site ranking well that had NO anchor text links.

I can understand if Google drop this (or maybe have) from their algorithm and just use links in whatever shape or form – OR not at all.

  • Website structure and page load time has always been a big point with our little SEO and Web Design service – so maybe I’m right – maybe I’m wrong ?
  • I see “Tags” “Places” and Social Media signals as the new “anchor text”…..

I read this on Search Engine Watch today and thought it was most interesting – my takeaway? Google aren’t stupid so watch it!

Are You Anchor Text Obsessed? Just Quit it Already

The “magic” of exact-match anchor text in links has been a false idol in SEO for far too long. Linking with an exact-match one- or two-word keyword or phrase isn’t always natural.

When people (who aren’t thinking about SEO) link, they do it with the brand name, or with the URL, or with “click here.” They don’t regularly link with “health insurance” or a perfect, money term, tidy and neat in their hrefs.

Link builders have obsessed over anchor text (with good reason) for a long time. Unfortunately, it’s become another manipulated signal. Click below for more >

Creating descriptive categories and filenames for the documents on your website can not only help you keep your site better

organised, but it could also lead to better crawling of your documents by search engines. Also, it can create easier,”friendlier” URLs for those that want to link to your content. Visitors may be intimidated by extremely long and cryptic URLs that contain few recognisable words.

URLs like http://www.brandonsbaseballcards.com/folder1/1089257/x1/0000023a.html can be confusing and unfriendly.

Google Community Plymouth, Devon

Users would have a hard time reciting the URL from memory or creating a link to it. Also, users may believe that a portion of the URL is unnecessary, especially if the URL shows many unrecognisable parameters. They might leave off a part, breaking the link.

Some users might link to your page using the URL of that page as the anchor text. If your URL contains relevant words, this provides users and search engines with more information about the page than an ID or oddly named parameter would.

URLs are displayed in search results.

Lastly, remember that the URL to a document is displayed as part of a search result in google, below the document’s title and snippet. Like the title and snippet, words in the URL on the search result appear in bold if they appear in the user’s query.

Google is good at crawling all types of URL structures, even if they’re quite complex, but spending the time to make your URLs as simple as possible for both users and search engines can help. Some webmasters try to achieve this by rewriting their dynamic URls to static ones; while Google is fine with this, please note that this is an advanced procedure and if done incorrectly, could cause crawling issues with your site.

Orkut and Community

Orkut by Google Community Push

I’ve always liked Orkut and have used it several times – In my opinion it will be part of the big puzzle that could well be the Google answer to a fantastic online community with a mix of Blogger, Google Buzz, Picasa, YouTube, Panaramio and more – all easily accessed through a GMail account

Here is a snippet from Google that came out today – it really tells a story and I recommend anyone that wants to do well on Google both in organic searches or, even rank higher with Google adWords sets up an Orkut account now!

At Google we believe that information should be universally accessible and useful. With that in mind, we’re making the information created and shared by users in their communities accessible to the world! Any Internet user will be able to find communities content using search engines like Google.

Starting shortly, people will be able to find your community much easier. If your community isn’t private, anyone can discover the amazing discussions happening inside your community in the search results for related topics that they’re interested in too. That way as well, more members can join if they think the content they find there is useful for them.

If you’re a community owner and would like to restrict access to your community content, don’t worry! If your community is private (content visible by members only), then only the community description page will be available on the web. If your community is public, the description page and its topics will be available, allowing you to reach so many more people because users not on orkut yet will also have the opportunity to learn and discover great new things from your community and its members.

Community owners can disable or re-enable the privacy setting at any time on the settings page. And if you’re one of the members of those communities, there’s no need to worry about your own privacy because orkut makes sure that no name or photo will be displayed for non-orkut users.

So what are you waiting for? Make a cool and informative description for your community and let the whole world enjoy it!
