SEO Bullshit

SEO has changed so very much since 1997 when I first fell into it!

SEO really is Internet Marketing these days and old hat styles of so called SEO with enormous keyword lists, getting placed on Joe Ant, DMOZ, Best of the Web and so on really has to be totally pointless and a terribly lame tactic that dates back to at least 2003.  I recently met one so called SEO expert  that still believed in all that old crap. Northern Lights, Alta Vista, Excite and Hotbot were even mentioned…. The same “SEO expert” thinks AOL is a search engine – the problem is some people believe the guy….

Really SEO is one part of Internet Marketing and your future customers want to find you on Google, Google+ Search Your World (it’s going to be massive believe me), Facebook, Twitter and very possibly Google’s Orkut (I’ve always felt Orkut would be massive!)  - Did I mention the quality links you can easily get from Linked In? It is my opinion that one link on Linked In is worth a thousand crap links elsewhere on the ‘net. Quality over quantity is the way

The signs are all there for Google + and it is not going away. Embrace it now!

Seize Opportunity and Don’t Resist Change

Knock it off with the massive keyword lists and laser focus on a few terms that really work, make Googlebot your friend by ensuring your website/blog is easy to crawl.  Get your <H1> tags right and please oh please use microdata plug ins for WordPress….

There are many, many different ways to gain traffic – ever thought of using Meet Up? It works and we use it. Simple – if you ever have a meeting use Meet Up – it costs but it will save you a lot in stress equity long term…

Get a simple plan together using Social Media and get your website bot friendly – please oh please get out of 2003…

Massive Google Update Coming

It is expected most websites will feel the shake up as Google launches a major update over the coming month!

Google’s search engine is to undergo one of its biggest overhauls over the next few months, by trying to provide ‘answers’ and not just web links, to user search queries.

Ab Fab Internet Marketing (call 07538 199694) anticipate a lot of ranking changes and consequently some annoyed people. We expect that Google+ will blend in more with search queries and this will at  launch  Google+ Search Your World.

It must be noted that the online photo editing service Picnik (which is superb) is discontinuing as is (hey we got a refund!) and we believe Picnik will be heavily in bed with Google+

Things are changing and we have you covered – we will not miss a trick!

Google Webmaster Guidelines

Googlers recommend the following to get better rankings in their search engine:

  • Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as cloaking.
  • Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
  • Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content. Make sure that your <title> elements and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.
  • Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number

Google Raid

I have talked about using Web Position Gold and Internet Business Promoter in the past – I have used both in the dark and distant past but do not recommend them..

It has already been noted everywhere that WPG is absolutely not good to use

Recently I met a businessman here in Plymouth that insisted on using Internet Business Promoter which is all very nice with pretty reports BUT does it really help to keep sending third party “bots” to Google – NO! It’s raiding their servers for no apparent reason and surely Google have some form of IP address penalty in place here??

My advice? Once again do not use third party seo tools make the most of Google in itself and knock it off using IBP, WPG and whatever!

This Plymouth Herald and why it will fail

…..print media is on it’s last legs. Locally we’ve seen the Exeter Express and Echo alongside the Torquay Herald Express “go "plymouth herald"weekly” and thus be rammed with old news and plenty of ads – packed with ads!

This is Plymouth which in reality is the “online Herald” will fail soon as most people use Google Alerts to find local news – the online “Herald” shows in most Google Alerts for the keyword “Plymouth”

How will they fail? Well Google have introduced a new segment to their algorithm that will penalise any website that has too many ads popping up everywhere  - sending searchers to websites like This is Plymouth who could well be penalised by Googlebot for having too many “in your face ads” which reduces the searchers experience.

Soon there will be “Nothing above the Fold but What You Pay For” along with a fantastic Google+ Search Your World which will give people searching Google for anything and everything Plymouth  totally fresh news, new news! free of annoying ads and pop ups – float ads and such …..

Let’s face it the Plymouth Herald doesn’t giveaway free ads so why should Google send people to the Herald website when it is plastered with really annoying ads?

Google Update:

Regardless of what it’s called, it is a dial up of one of the main focuses of the Panda Update. They’re re-targeting ad heavy sites and dropping them from the rankings. According to Google, users have been complaining about the amount of ‘above the fold’ space that some sites have dedicated to ads alone. The argument is that it takes longer and is harder for users to find the content they’re looking for.

Matt Cutts of Google Web Spam Team officially stated that “Google understands many sites use multiple ads at the top of their site to bring in money, and those are commonly the best performers.” However, some sites take up too much space at the top of their site to a degree that it negatively affects the user experience, and those sites are the ones feeling this latest update.

Plymouth Buzz is waiting in the wings with fresh new content and some great new feature writers – OH! and no boring old ads and intrusive pop ups everywhere !
